ETRI has developed high-performance cloud distribution file system software and technology to increase storage capacity and improve performance.
Consequently, cloud service providers in Korea are now able to operate existing online storage devices in a more flexible and efficient manner.
Korean companies have thus far had no option but to use foreign storage devices, due to quantity-related uncertainties and lack of maintenance manpower.
With the new technology developed by ETRI, however, service providers only have to install the software in a number of computers to use the large-capacity hard discs online, based on the storage virtualization technology.
If 100 petabytes is built per year, the performance of this technology will have an effect of a 10 billion KRW savings compared to the use of foreign storage.
By establishing an ecosystem for cloud software technologies and systemically controlling R&D quality, ETRI successfully commercialized the technology on February 10, 2015, with the U+ Box cloud storage provided as LG Uplus.
"This technological development through national R&D efforts bears significance in that it not only replaces foreign solutions, but also proves the global competitiveness of Korean software technologies in global storage markets" said Dr. Yeong-gyun Kim, head of the ETRI Storage System Research Team.
ETRI is also planning to launch a project in 2015 to develop advanced technologies at the exabyte (1PB x 1024) level.
