ETRI Develops Key Technology for Smart Optical Shutters
ETRI has succeeded in adjusting the transmittance of sunlight by applying an electric charge to a material attached on a window. This electrochromic technology involves nanostructures of 8 nanometers (10-9m) each. These nanostructures have a large specific surface area due to the small size of particles.

ETRI’s new development has a fast switching speed of 0.1 second, which is a significant improvement over existing commercial products. The transparency can be adjusted to be as dark as 90%. The technology will be applied to prevent glare in rear-view mirrors of vehicles. The fast switching speed of 0.1 second will also be useful for vehicles entering tunnels.
The new technology is expected to have an impact on the display market. ETRI’s optical shutters for display purposes are currently focused on black and blue colors, and will soon expand to red and green.

Moreover, ETRI seeks to create high value-added convergence industries by integrating ET and IT into the new technology, which is predicted to have promising applications in various fields.
