ETRI Leads Int’l Standards for Cyber Security for Smart Ship
Against the backdrop of increasing cybersecurity threats to vessels, ETRI proposed measures to protect equipment and systems on vessels from the cyber security threats and attacks and published as an international standards for the maritime sector. Involving ICT convergent technologies, related to vessel security and safety standards, adopted as an international standard. These technologies were developed as part of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning’s project for developing international standards for integrated vessel network safety and testing.

ETRI’s technologies define security structures and functional requirements of vessel devices, networks, and gateways to protect equipment from security threats from internal and external systems. As a result, the new international standards are expected to be mandatorily loaded on all vessels in order to provide a range of additional services for vessels in a more stable manner, and are also anticipated to secure dominance in the relevant markets. Meanwhile, the plenary and working group meeting of the IEC Technical Committee 80 were held in Busan, marking the 1st time they were held in Asia, for seven days from October 14, 2015.
In addition, the two-day meetings of the National Marine Electronics Association(NMEA), one of the international standards for shipborne equipment in addition to the International Electrotechnical Commission.

In partnership with the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, ETRI led the creation of new working groups for vessels’ common maritime data structure(CMDS) designed to support variety of services including the marine IoT, and Dr. Kwang-Il Lee, principal researcher of the Cyber Security System Research Department at ETRI, was selected as the new convenor of the new working group. Studying shipbuilding ICT security technology of ETRI, Dr. Lee said, “With the inauguration of new IEC chairperson and creation of new working group, the Busan plenary will be marked as the turning-point of new era for radio communications and navigational equipment and system.”
