As a hub of IT Korea and the leader in Korea’s electricity industry, ETRI and KEPRI(Korea Electric Power Research Institute) decided to cooperate in discovering new industries by converging the electricity and ICT sectors. On October 22, 2015, the two parties signed an MOU for mutual cooperation, laying a foundation for creating new power-ICT industries.
At the signing ceremony, the two parties discussed potential joint research projects through development in the electricity industry and technology exchanges in power transmission, transformation, and distribution as well as in the IoT(Internet of Things) in the ICT area, big data, data mining and sensors.
As part of the agreement, ETRI and KEPRI will have online and offline workshops for technology exchanges among the researchers of the two institutes, hold bilateral meetings on a regular basis to discuss areas for cooperation in the electricity and ICT fields, and strengthen cooperation to discover joint research projects.
“Cooperation with ETRI will be of great benefit,” said KEPRI President In-Kyu Choi. “As a ‘Smart Energy Creator,’ the motto of our company, we will endeavor to strengthen R&D capacity for innovation by means of the R&D initiative and ICT competitiveness ETRI can provide.”
KEPRI was established in 1961 as a subsidiary research group of KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation) in order to ensure national self-reliance in terms of electricity technology to carry out R&D activities for stable operation of electric facilities, secure core technologies for future electricity industry, and address technology issues in the electricity industry. In particular, the research institute has contributed to national economic growth through world-class technological accomplishments by developing the world’s first technology for 765kV of ultrahigh-pressure transmission and by domestically producing automatic distribution systems and desulfurization facilities.
