ETRI IT Children Press Corps Participates in DIY Program
As part of ETRI’s endeavors to foster IT talent of Future Generation, ETRI IT Children Press Corps participated in a DIY(Do-It-Yourself) program in Daejeon on September 19th, 2015. This program was designed to allow children to research and develop original ICT products or services by tapping into their imagination and creativity. This experiential event was planned by Protocol Engineering Center of ETRI, which has been promoting creative culture related to DIY efforts for ICT, and its educational programs were delivered by Magic Eco, a member business of the ICT DIY Forum.

Children attended the section called “Introduction to Arduino and Scratch,” where they learned about the renowned open-source computer hardware and the software education program developed by MIT Media Lab for children. The next session, “Making an Arduino Idiot Box,” offered the participants a chance to design their own software program for Arduino and create an “idiot box” from which a robot arm popped out when a button was pressed.
“I was a little bit nervous because making an ICT product seemed very difficult to me,” said Hyeong-jin Jeong, a fifth grader of St. Mary’s Elementary School in Daejeon. “But I found it really fun as soon as I began designing, and now I want to try building things later.”

“This event was a valuable opportunity to kindle children’s passion and drive for creativity,” remarked Dr. Hyung Jun Kim, Director of the Protocol Engineering Center. “We will continue to expand a foundation for creative culture to help not only children but also the general public familiarize themselves with ICT DIY in their daily life and actually try it.”

Through its IT Children Press Corps aimed at promoting society-wide interest in science, ETRI has provided a range of opportunities to 170 elementary school students in fourth to sixth grades across the nation to participate in science-related exhibitions and various experiential activities.
