ATSC Approved ETRI’s 3D Broadcast Transmission
On April 28, the standard for broadcast-telecommunications convergent HD 3DTV was finally approved as an international standard by the U.S. Advanced Television System Committee(ATSC).

This technology is the world-first broadcast-telecommunications convergent 3DTV technology jointly developed by ETRI, along with Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, KBS, SBS, Kyung-Hee University, and the TTA(Telecommunications Technology Association).

3DTV separates left and right images and sends them to the left and right eyes separately to enable viewers wearing 3D glasses to recognize the images as 3D. With this technology, the left images are utilized for terrestrial DTV networks and the right images for 3D broadcast using any idle broadband from either IP-based telecommunications or broadcast networks.

Unlike the current 3DTV broadcast system, this technology enables 3DTV broadcast without dividing or additionally assigning broadband, thereby featuring improved definition.

ETRI also enhanced the stability of data transmission by employing an environment-adaptive method for real-time transmission.
Dr. Nam Ho Heo, director of the Broadcasting System Research Department said “This technology is the first international standard that integrates broadcast and telecommunications technology for large-scale, high-definition 3DTV that goes beyond the limitations of broadcast channels.”

This technology is the third international standard ETRI obtained, following the real-time 3DTV transmission technology with service compatibility selected by the ATSC in January 2013, and the convergent 3DTV technology for fixed and mobile broadcast in October 2014.

ETRI expects that this international standardization will not only solidify the position of Korean technology, but also help Korean television manufacturers and 3D broadcast equipment producers expand their presence in the global markets.

ETRI has thus far applied 12 international standardization patents related to 3D television, with the hope of having a significant economic impact in the near future based on its possession of international standards and IPR.
