ETRI developed a technology to build infrastructure that is able to collect data on building interiors based on smartphone applications, automatically construct a database, and provide location services to users in both indoor and outdoor environments.
This is the world’s leading technology to build indoor location-based infrastructure aimed at providing total user services based on the collection of infrastructure data of businesses and the government and the establishment of a location determination database. The accuracy of a user’s location is approximately five meters.
Satellite-reliant navigation has thus far been able to search outdoor locations only, but as this technology is able to provide detection within indoor locations as well, it is expected to be widely utilized for emergency rescue and other similar activities.
This technology indicates a user’s current location onto a map by using the Wi-Fi function or sensors embedded in smartphones rather than the global positioning system(GPS).
ETRI is pursuing technology transfer to not only navigation manufacturers, but also indoor location information providers, Internet portal-site operators, and online shopping mall companies.
