ETRI developed an optical receiver applicable to switching systems in mega-sized high-capacity data centers. The essential technologies to solve the internet traffic problems are integrated into tiny equipment having the size of a fingernail (1.3 x 1.1 cm).
To solve the traffic problems due to the data big bang, ETRI increased the data transmission capacity per unit module to 400 Gbps, which is four times as high as the conventional capacity (100 Gbps). Instead of the conventional two-step modulation (Non-Return-to-Zero, NRZ) where the transmission is 1 bit at a time, the newly developed module employed four-step multiple modulation (Pulse Amplitude Modulation-4, PAM-4), which is a next-generation high-efficiency transmission method. As a result, the transmission speed has become four times higher than before.
ETRI has established the Knowledge Sharing Platform (KSP) website for convenient sharing of its research accomplishments with the nation’s citizens. The KSP provides a total of 40,000 research accomplishment items from ETRI, including 25,000 research articles, 9,000 patents, 4,700 technology transfer reports, 300 international standard patents, and other research reports and books. Any citizen can freely view the full text of the research accomplishments of which copyright belongs to ETRI. The website is https://www.etri.re.kr/ksp.
For four days between May 23 and 26, ETRI displayed the newest ICTs that may be promptly commercialized at the 2018 ICT Commercialization Festival 21. During the festival, ETRI not only displayed the technologies but also successfully implemented various events for the communication and cooperation with the middle and small-sized ICT companies, including ‘Promising Commercializable ICT Briefing’, ‘Technology Transfer Consultation Meeting’, ‘Presentation of Successful Technology Commercialization Cases’, and ‘Human Resources Recruiting Briefing.’
