Future of Robots Made Possible by ETRI Once considered mere toys, robots have become an irreplaceable, major force in industrial settings. Industrial robots perform their jobs quickly and precisely based on their respective pre-programmed logical structures, with abilities far surpassing their human counterparts in terms of productivity and accuracy. However, it is hard to conclude that artificial intelligence (AI) has attained full maturity to make autonomous robots a reality. Robotics has yet to reach a level that will allow robots to recognize three-dimensional space in real time. Then how long do we need to wait before we meet robots in our daily lives? ETRI is taking steps, albeit quietly, to be able to answer this question.
The recent worldwide success of the movie Ready Player One with its theme in virtual reality is heightening interest in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). In the film, people put on goggles that take them into the virtual reality world of Oasis and spend most of their lives there. The Seoul VR-AR EXPO 2018, where people could experience Oasis-like realistic VR, was successfully held at COEX from April 19 to 22.
