PyeongChang ICT Pavilion

The PyeongChang ICT Pavilion was popular among spectators as they could experience 'ICT Olympics,' which was one of the five core objectives of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. The ICT Pavilion drew the attention of visitors as a place where advanced ICT could be experienced, and unique spectacles were provided. The spectators may experience 5G mobile communication, IoT, UHD, AI and VR services.

The pavilion is located on the second floor(735m2) of the PyeongChang Olympics Plaza near the Olympic Stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies. The spectators could experience the 5G mobile communication, IoT, UHD, AI and VR services. during the Olympics period.
When entering into the PyeongChang Pavilion, you will receive a 'smart band.' If you tag the band on a machine and enter your personal information, you will be registered. Each time you participate in one of the various experience programs in the ICT Pavilion, you can create your own experience history by tagging the smart band. Your photos during the experience programs are transmitted to the Memory Cube, and you can receive the photos through your registered account. Also, the smart band was used as an electronic wallet during the Olympics.

2018 PyeongChang Olympics Enjoyed through 5G UHD

First, the UHD Ultra Wide Vision(UWV) technology shows you a curved panoramic video. The definition is about four times higher than that of home TVs. You will be fully immersed when watching the highlights of the Olympics on the large 5G screen, which is so lively that you may feel as if you were watching the game on the very site. The spectators could experience the high definition panoramic videos introducing the ICT and the key paradigms of the Olympics.

VR Bobsledding Experience

The spectators may experience bobsledding, one of the Olympic games, through a VR simulation. Bobsledding is a sport where a team of several athletes enjoy together, with a driver in the first seat and others on the following seats. The spectators may enjoy the experience of fast riding through a narrow track. The players on the bobsled should move the bodies to the left or to the right according to the directions shown on the VR screen. If the player on the front misses, the players behind will also miss the direction even to the point of flying out of the track. The VR bobsledding is as realistic as the real sport.

VR Snowboarding Experience

You can wear a snowboard on your feet, and the VR snowboard glasses are fixed according to the shape of your head. You may hold the knobs as indicated by the person in charge of the experience program, and look at the left side in a ready position. Then the countdown begins: 3, 2, 1, Go! Feel the excitement when you jump and fly in the air!

Aquarium Fish Robot Underwater Ice Hockey Game

The ice hockey game played by aquarium fish robots also draws attention. These fish robots, produced in Korea, may be operated even in water 50m deep. If you move the sensors while focusing your mind on the fish robots, they will swim in the water like real fish. It gives unique fun because the swimming fish robots may be controlled with joy sticks.

VR Roller Coaster Experience

The VR roller coaster rotates to the left and to the right, revolves 360 degrees, and then suddenly stops. Just looking upward and downward will make you feel the thrill. If you are too old and weak-hearted, it would be better to say 'no' because the thrill may make you feel a little dizzy. The spectators who have experienced the VR roller coaster said that it was less scary then the real roller coasters in theme parks but more fun because many videos were shown on the screen.

Smart Soohorang AI Guide Robot

The Soohorang AI Guide Robot is a smart robot having the functions of speech recognition and translation. It can also provide automatic interpretation and translation guides. You can ask a question to Soohorang, but you should avoid too difficult words and use short questions.

The ICT pavilion was supposed to open in January 2018, but for the lead-up to the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, it was opened earlier in late November, 2017. Choi, Jeong-ho, the head of the PyeongChang ICT Olympics Promotion Team, from the Ministry of Science and ICT, was in charge of the operation of the ICT Pavilion. He stated, "We concentrated our efforts to show how ICT may be applied to the Olympics and focused on the lead-up to the PyeongChang ICT Olympics." He added, "The spectators may feel fun through actual experiences and increase their understanding of the technologies." The PyeongChang ICT Pavilion is a place of two-fold fun where the spectators may watch the PyeongChang Olympic Games and enjoy the ICT experience programs.
