Energy Trading Technology Based on International Standards
A foundational technology has been developed to allow individuals to purchase and sell residual electricity.

On November 30 2015, ETRI announced that the institution had developed an energy trading technology that can enable consumers having solar and wind energy, fuel cells, and energy storage devices to trade remaining energy resources.

This technology is based on energy trading intermediation to connect electric energy among consumers. The core technologies for energy trading include the following: technology for energy information exchange protocol; P2P-based energy trading technology that directly connects individuals for information sharing; and technology for integrated management and trading of distributed resource energy. They also include technology to accurately forecast electric energy demand within a building and comprehensively manage remaining energy.

For energy trading, a range of information on electric energy for trade and sale such as electricity production, prices, and schedules must be registered on the server of the brokerage market.
For instance, a prospective seller may register information regarding how much electric energy will be remaining during which time slot, and potential consumers will make a tender in auction. Once the bid is closed, the seller transmits electric energy to the buildings of buyers by using the discharge function of energy storage equipment or through a separate wire exclusively used for energy trading. ETRI stated that this new technology is currently being used for Red Ginseng Spa and Hotel located in Jinan and will be applied to the twelfth research building of ETRI.

“It is of significance that we developed a foundational technology to allow energy consumers to directly trade electricity as a means to respond to electricity peaks,” explains Dr. Il-woo Lee, Head of the Energy IT Technology Research Section. “Japan will introduce energy liberalization in 2016 to grant complete liberty to household power retailing. South Korea needs to develop related technology and prepare relevant policy measures soon.”
