Core Technology Developed for Nat’l Defense Networks
In collaboration with Netgenetech, SNI, Accupix, Telefield, and Soongsil University, ETRI has developed IP integration equipment and multifunctional access equipment that can be utilized for national defense networks. The developed technology is a core networking technology of defense communications networks and can integrate a number of physical wired and wireless networks into a single network. If applied to national defense networks, it will improve network efficiency and economic feasibility and even replace imported defense communications networks.

The technology for IP integration equipment enables a single device to consolidate 64 or more networks of similar grades among 100 or more military communications networks for different purpose. It applies the network virtualization technology and binds together the networks to ensure logical integration. In the meantime, interconnection has been a difficult task because military communications networks, tactical networks, and defense wireless networks all have different interfaces including IP, ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) and so on.
To address the issue, the technology for multifunctional access equipment interlinks those varying networks and provides all-IP integrated networks with sufficient survivability so that military communications can remain connected in case of contingencies. This will not only reinforce security of military communications networks, but also ensure sufficient preparation against network-centric warfare through domestic technology and equipment.

As part of quality control under the national defense regulations of the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality, the new technology was successfully tested for interconnection for five days from November 9, at the Defense Communication Command Force in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do. “This is an R&D case of actual collaboration between national defense and IT,” said Dr. Hea-sook Park, Head of the Cloud Networking Research Section. “This will bring forward the independent national defense of South Korea, which has largely relied on overseas technologies.”
