Dr. Won-seok Lee of ETRI was appointed to lead international standards for connected car, which is a car that is equipped with internet access and wireless local area network. He will assume the role of editor of the Automotive Business Group launched early this year by the World Wide Web Consortium(W3C), an international group to develop open standards for the Web. Dr. Lee has thus now secured editorship for drafting two standards: an application programming interface(API) to access vehicle information and an interface for vehicle data. The W3C has largely focused on international Web standards, such as HTML5, and it is noteworthy that an ETRI researcher has been selected as an editor for the organization’s first working group aimed at leading automotive standardization.
In its IoT outlook report for 2015, Gartner, a market research company, predicted that the markets for connected cars would account for about 20 percent of the entire automobile market in five years. Another market research firm IHS also expected that the number of connected cars to be released to the market would increase from 23 million in 2014 to 152 million in 2020. “Standards for Web-based connected cars frequently have been dealt with at prestigious trade shows such as the WMC(World Mobile Congress) and CES,” said Dr. Seung-yun Lee, head of Service Standard Research Team, ETRI. “It is remarkable that Korea is leading the development of core standards for the connected car markets, which are expected to grow fast.”
