Certified by FIDO as the first globally approved technology
ETRI has developed an integrated biometrics solution to enable
password-free login with users’ fingerprints, face, or voice information.
This new technology has won the world’s first international certification.
This solution is a platform to allow a range of biometric information
to be used for authentication in electronic commerce or other online services.
Independently developed by ETRI, this technology passed the certification test
held by the Fast Identity Online(FIDO) Alliance in San Jose, CA, United States, on April 29, 2015.
The FIDO Alliance is an industry consortium launched in February 2013
to address the lack of interoperability among strong authentication devices
and the problems users face creating and remembering multiple user names and passwords.
The FIDO Certified testing program is the first official certification program held for FIDO-certified products.
ETRI has won the FIDO 1.0 certification with its FIDO client, server,
and authentication device that satisfy international standards among the world first certified products.
International recognition for simple and Integrated authentication
Once a program is installed with this certified technology,
users can pay online simply by using their biometric information, such as fingerprints.
Even when a website is hacked and passwords are stolen,
the FIDO-certified technology keeps the damage to that specific website and prevents further harm.
Since the draft for FIDO’s international standards was announced in early 2014,
ETRI has concentrated on its research capacity for the development of authentication technology.
This technology was applied to the ZEP(Zero Effort Payment), a simple offline payment system jointly developed with BC Card,
and introduced to the global stage through the FIDO Alliance in December 2014.
The ZEP service is a BLE(Bluetooth Low Energy)-based solution to allow simple payment within a radius of 1-2 meters from a smartphone.
Further efforts needed for global gtandardization
This new technology is expected to be commercialized by the end of 2015,
after technology transfer is completed for four authentication-related companies in Korea.
“The FIDO-certified technology of ETRI is currently being applied to various 'FinTech'services,”
said Dr. Dae-sun Choi, head of the Authentication Technology Research Team of ETRI.
“Authentication through face, voice, wearable devices, and smart cards will also be commercialized in the near future.”
Also, Dr. Seung-Hun Jin, director of Cyber Security Research Division of ETRI, said
“ETRI will propagate the FIDO technology through technology transfer for Korean companies and
contribute to the improvement of Korean authentication environment and global standardization.”
