Underground Safety Research Group Kick off Its Research Activities
On January 13, 2015, ETRI held a signboard-hanging ceremony at its premises to celebrate the foundation of the Underground Safety(UGS) Research Group, which will begin conducting convergent research to solve pending social issues including sinkholes.

Chairperson Lee Sang-Cheon of the National Research Council of Science and Technology held a meeting upon the establishment of the research group and encouraged researchers at government-funded research institutes to take the initiative in solving social problems and enhancing convenience of the general public.

The chairperson's speech was followed by a progress report made by Mr. Lee In-Hwan of the UGS Research Group, which is tasked with various items, including the monitoring and management system of urban underground facilities by means of the Internet of Things(IoT).

At the meeting, the Group’s researchers mentioned that the group, a collaboration of four independent research institutes, must accomplish convergence based on openness and sharing.
Chairperson Lee also paid a visit to the research labs that accommodate the UGS Research Group and cheered on the researchers.

The signboard-hanging ceremony was attended by President Kim Heung-Nam of ETRI, a participating institution in the Research Group, as well as President Lee Tai Sik of the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, President Kim Ki-Hwan of the Korea Railroad Research Institute, and Vice President Shin Jung-ho of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources.

Chairperson Lee Sang-Cheon asked the nation’s top researchers to endeavor to realize the intended accomplishments that meet the expectations of the public and added that the National Research Council of Science and Technology would spare no support in the course.

At the end of 2014, ETRI concluded a cooperation agreement involving four research institutes to pursue convergent research. Under the agreement, a total of seven businesses, eight universities, and the Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation will participate in research projects with a budget of $29 million over the next three years.
