ETRI has developed a high-efficiency video coding encoder that allows real-time compression of 4K-UHD, which offers four times the resolution of full HD to 60 fps video.
This technology improves the compression rate twofold compared to the mainstream H.264/AVC. This not only supports UHD broadcasting, but also significantly reduces the amount of data transmission.
With this technology, ETRI has produced 66 domestic and international patents, 29 journal articles, and 5 technology transfers. In addition to UHD broadcasting, the institute will continue technology transfers to small and medium-sized companies, so as to better support multimedia services including VoD, video conferencing, and video surveillance.

To enable real-time compression of UHD video in hardware, the research team plans to develop more lightweight and accelerated technology. Future directions include improving UHD quality and providing high-quality video services with minimal data.
