ETRI unveiled its new management vision: National AI Research Institute - Making a Better Tomorrow. It added the position of vice president and restructured itself into four research laboratories, an AI Research Laboratory and three divisions.
ETRI announced its management plans for the next three years and plans to focus on developing intelligent technology to overcome time/space and intelligent challenges faced by human beings. The institution is also committed to addressing everyday issues for public purposes based on its new vision and restructured organization.
ETRI explained that the key element of the emergence of the 4IR and new revolution is artificial intelligence and that it will serve as an integrated research institution for national intelligence.
ETRI has promoted a project to support the construction and industrialization of a photonics process innovation platform for the past five years since 2014. The participating researchers significantly helped related SMEs by increasing their sales and helping them to enter overseas markets.
ETRI has recently announced that its project center, which has operated for the past two years and five months, supported 89 packaging-related manufacturers including optical communication companies, electronic component makers and sensor makers, helping them to record sales of KRW 33.3 billion. In addition, the center provided support in joint use of equipment, creation of prototypes, and counseling and advice for technology management, which resulted in 1,701 new jobs in companies related to optical convergence, electronic components, and sensor modules, added value worth KRW 174 billion, and productivity effect worth KRW 612 billion.
ETRI announced that it now holds a total of 828 international standards and patents including the 56 patents added during 2018. Most of ETRI’s international standards and patents include 5G mobile technology including MPEG, the standard video compression technology, and broadcasting system (ATSC 3.0). Such achievement increased the potential of ETRI to lead the core ICT market.
In addition, ETRI stated that it set 31 international standards at international standardization organizations such as ITU and ISO, submitted 45 contributions reflecting ETRI’s international standards and patents, and secured 70 new international chairpersonships.
On July 16, ETRI signed an MOU with KEPRI, a research unit of KEPCO, for technology exchanges in power and ICT areas. The two parties agreed to technology exchange between experts in AI and big data, the two key areas of the 4IR.
Under the MOU, the two institutions plan to ▲cooperate in power/communication technology in the area of electricity, ▲exchange technology for wired/wireless networks, IoT, big data, and AI in the ICT area, ▲make joint efforts in discovering new business in electricity and big data areas, and ▲jointly develop an AI platform in energy industry and discover potential R&D projects.
