On June 19, ETRI’s Principal Researcher Eun-yeong Jo was awarded the Order of Civil Merit (Dongbaek Medal). As an augmented reality expert, Jo developed a map service application for pedestrians using augmented reality technology for the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games and Paralympics in 2018. The Office for Government Policy Coordination highly appreciated that the researcher acquired the technology early and contributed to enhancing convenience for tourists. The Office added that the researcher led the creation and operation of a volunteering club within ETRI and engaged in volunteer activities for the past 14 years for the vulnerable.
ETRI launched its development of open base station distributed units based on 5G new radio (NR) that supports dynamic functional breakdown. The existing 4G network structure has limitations in providing smooth 5G services. To meet the requirements of 5G services, the existing system needs large-traffic telecommunication with hundreds of Gbps, which requires significantly higher transmission capacity and costs.
To address the issue, ETRI began to develop 5G mobile telecommunication equipment (modem) that can support large-traffic transmission and uses the open standards. As this new equipment uses the open standards, medium-sized and small businesses will find it easier to enter the markets and, through technology transfer, the new equipment is expected to contribute to vitalizing the market for next-generation 5G equipment and increasing the exports of mobile telecom equipment.
On June 4, ETRI introduced and demonstrated four of the world’s top broadcasting equipment technology and convergent services at Next Gen TV Workshop held at Jeju Technopark. As a venue for over 80 Korean and international broadcasting/telecommunication experts to discuss next-generation broadcasting technology, this workshop offered an opportunity for ETRI to publicize its broadcasting technology and lead the next-generation technology.
On June 4, Minister of Science and ICT Yeong-min Yu and Minister of Defense Gyeong-du Jeong visited ETRI. During their visit, the two ministers attended the ETRI technology exhibition held at ETRI Building 12 and were shown eight key national defense technologies including natural-language voice recognition and Q&A technology, 5G mobile network technology, and technology to detect and identify the remains of those killed in the Korean War.
On June 10, ETRI unveiled the latest Korean language model “KorBERT” on its website. The researchers made public two types of models: a language model with more Korean data based on Google’s language expression methods and another language model reflecting the characteristics of Korean as an agglutinative language. These new models are expected to help further develop AI services using Korean language such as AI secretary, AI-based Q&A, and intelligent search.
