A team of Korean researchers has successfully developed a rubber pressure sensor that can be attached directly to an artificial hand (or leg) of a handicapped person or a robot.
ETRI announced on October 18th that it has developed a rubber type sensor, following the development of a fabric sensor based on graphene composite material at the beginning of this year. This sensor is a rubber-type pressure and strain compound sensor, having a high repeatability, even after bent or stretched thousands of times, and a sensitivity more than 10 times higher than that of conventional sensors.
The researchers plan to miniaturize the sensor so that it can be applied to gloves or fingers, while maximizing the sensitivity to make it activate with even miniscule pressure responses. Going forward, this sensor will be able to serve as a human nervous system and help users to more vividly feel sensation.

Korean researchers have developed key technologies to cope with the hyper-connected society by using the Internet of Everything (IoE); two such technologies have been selected as candidate standards by the International Organization for Standardization. These key technologies are expected to support YouTubers or broadcasting jockeys, who are always on the go, through faster and real-time network services without data traffic loss. With this technology, not only data consumers but also data creators can change location while broadcasting contents, thanks to the seamless real-time content streaming technology that gives users higher mobility.

Following the success in broadcasting the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games through US terrestrial broadcasting agencies earlier this year, Korean researchers have made another achievement by succeeding in transmitting contents seamlessly through interworking between broadcasting and communication networks. According to the researchers, this is a technology that will enable a user to enjoy terrestrial channels without interruption, even when user enters a tunnel, reaches the outer blocks of a city, or is in shaded areas around buildings; the system works in such situations by immediately switching to a communication network such as an LTE network. ETRI announced that together with Samsung Electronics it had successfully demonstrated seamless content delivery technology by interworking an ATSC 3.0 broadcasting network with broadband at Jeju Techno Park for three days from November 6th before the board members of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC).
The researchers also developed Layered Division Multiplexing (LDM) and scalable video compression (SHVC) technologies that enable UHD-level resolution even on-the-go; the technology adopted North American standards. It was highly praised by many in the broadcasting industry at the ATSC Conference, held in Washington DC last May.

Deep View, a visual intelligence technology developed by Korean researchers, will be applied to the development of technology for precisely recognizing human behavior at the joint-level in CCTV images. The researchers have decided to apply this technology to curb illegal garbage dumping.
ETRI announced that it will fully utilize visual artificial intelligence technology to crack down on illegal dumping of garbage in downtown areas. Deep View is a technology that not only recognizes a person in an image but also precisely recognizes human actions such as putting down, throwing, or dumping an object. This technology is expected to serve as a core technology for detecting and preventing crimes and incidents in downtown areas.
