ETRI announced its plan to develop core security technology needed to facilitate the commercialization of Ethernet-based next-generation automotive networks.
ETRI researchers emphasized that the applications of Ethernet and security solutions were essential to responding to the era of driverless, autonomous vehicles, characterized by broadened bandwidths, increased use of connection cables for communications media, and various application services. In this regard, ETRI researchers, in cooperation with companies specialized in Ethernet, are starting the development of core software related to security for vehicle applications and verification companies for automotive software. These security technologies, when developed, will be applied to Ethernet gateways for automotive applications.
ETRI’s semiconductor laboratory, the first institute in Korea to study semiconductors in earnest, also known as the rice of the industry, celebrated the 30th anniversary of its foundation. Since its 1988 foundation under the name of Silicon Laboratory, it has pioneered the domestic semiconductor industry.
According to ETRI, the laboratory’s major technologies have been transferred to domestic companies and commercialized, and the laboratory has also been involved in most of the country’s ICT export products that are profitable. Through these procedures, its economic ripple effect is estimated at 63 trillion KRW, i.e., 48 trillion KRW for direct effects and 15 trillion KRW for indirect effects.
On the 17th, ETRI held a technology workshop at its Convergence Technology Commercialization Center to mark the 30th anniversary of the foundation of its semiconductor laboratory, which was established in 1988. Nak-Woong Eum, Director of the ICT Materials and Components Research Laboratory, said, “As an innovator leading the global ICT materials and components market, ETRI’s semiconductor laboratory will take one step further to help the domestic ICT industry advance to the next level.”
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP) announced the 2018 Top 100 National R&D Performances.
The following achievements of ETRI made the list: Flexible Thermal Module Design and System Packaging Technology Based on Thermal Analysis of Human Body (Dr. Seung-Eun Moon), Development of Core Technology for Ka-Bandwidth Reconfigurable Satellite Payload for Communications and Broadcasting Applications to Become a Space Power (Dr. Dong-Pil Chang), Scientific Verification of Electromagnetic Waves for Wireless Communications on the Human Body (Dr. Hyung-Do Choi), Development of Millimeter Wave-based Access and Access Hole System for Mobile Communication Applications (Dr, Tae-Joong Kim), Automatic Extraction Technology of Sensory Elements for XD Media and Manufacturing Technology of Sensory Effect Metadata (Dr. Mi-Kyong Han), Enactment of International Standards for UHD Internet Broadcasting and Acquisition of Standard Patent and Technology / Development and Dissemination of Standard Technology for Internet Broadcasting Allowing Large-scale Concurrent User Access (Dr. Wook Hyun). Also, ETRI was honored to be selected as the best organization in the technology transfer, commercialization, and business start-up sector in recognition of its technology transfer outcomes exemplified by the transfer of Minds Voice of Customer (VOC) and maun.ai, its multi-language voice recognition and automatic translation engine for English, Chinese, and Japanese.
