On January 17 ETRI published 'Current Status and Prediction of Domestic Mobile Traffic' as a part of the development work for frequency virtuous cycle technology that allows rapid securing and supplying of electromagnetic wave resources. According to the study, the mobile traffic in Korea will rapidly grow by a factor of 10 in the following six years, reaching 3.2 exabytes (EB) at the end of 2023.
As the 5G system is growing, the share of high-resolution video applications will be increased, including full HD (FHD) and 4K and 8K videos. ETRI predicted that the high-resolution video traffic will be increased to 2.8 EB. In addition, as the traffic is systematically predicted according to the mobile services and the market environment in Korea, a more objective and efficient electromagnetic resources policy may be established in connection with the demand and supply of mobile frequencies.
ETRI has successfully developed a unidirectional data transfer technology for strengthening the internal security of control systems for national infrastructure facilities. This technology is applied to the data extraction and collection solutions and the data integration server intervals of the control system of a power plant that is constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South America and will undergo a test-run in the second half of this year. This is the first case of exporting a unidirectional data transfer device developed in Korea.
The system developed by ETRI consists of 1) a physical single link-based unidirectional data transfer technology that basically blocks any external accesses to protect the safe domain, 2) an exclusive protocol-based unidirectional data exchange technology to protect the security of transferred data, and 3) a forward error correction technology to secure the reliability of transferred data.
ETRI will provide the relevant technologies to smart manufacturing infrastructure that will lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution, greatly contributing to the industrial development, the pioneering of new markets, as well as securing citizens' lives and safety.
A science book showing the future changed by virtual reality and augmented reality, the essential technologies to lead the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, was published for the general public.
ETRI announced that it published "Future of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality" as a part of the Easy IT series, a science book that ETRI has published for 12 years for general readers.
This book may satisfy the curiosity of the general public about the rising technologies of virtual reality and augmented reality, and may serve as a basic textbook for those who want to enter the field of these technologies. Lee Gil Haeng, the assistant vice president of the Creative Content Research Division states, "The ultimate goal of virtual reality is to display as content various situations of the real world that people may not experience by themselves as well as situations that exist only in the imagination. The virtual reality technology lets the users see, hear, and touch the virtual reality by using human sensory organs, creating an illusion to the users as if the artificial situations really existed."
To come closer to the nation’s citizens, ETRI renovated its official representative website. The new website includes user-centered responsive web-based content screens, and the structure of the website was modified for effective interactions in the information service. The concept of the renovated web page reflects the emotions contained in the brand identity (BI) of ETRI, which is 'Heart. Embraced, Future. Connected' and 'ETRI Where Future Begins.' The new web page is focused on the IDX strategy, which is the national transformation strategy of Korea for the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The renewed website will allow ETRI to systematically manage various online information and activate information sharing to provide new knowledge to online customers.

The head of the Australian Defense Science Technology (DST) Group visited ETRI on January 11 (Thursday) and discussed cooperation in the field of national defense technologies. After introducing ETRI and the DST Group, the head of the DST group and other visitors went on a tour of ETRI, visiting the Radio & Satellite Research Division and the Information Security Research Division. They also visited the virtual training system for special warfare and discussed methods for cooperation between the two institutes.
