Dr. Ki-Uk Kyung won IEEE’s Early Career Award
Dr. Ki-Uk Kyung at ETRI has won the Early Career Award, bestowed by the Institute of Electrical Electronics Engineers(IEEE).

Winners of this award are selected by the Technical Committee on Haptics of the IEEE from among scientists who have published outstanding research results in regard to user interfaces related to the sense of touch, out of all five senses of the human body.

The awarding ceremony was held on June 25th as a part of the IEEE World Haptics Conference in Chicago, the United States.

Celebrating this honor, Dr. Kyung delivered a plenary talk with the theme “Transition: From Stiffness to Softness.”

Working as a senior researcher at ETRI, Dr. Kyung assumed the position of Section Managing Director of the Transparent Transducer & UX Creative Research Center, a sub-organization of the Future Research Creative Laboratory, in 2012.
In 2013, he was appointed as the head of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning’s Promising Convergence Technology Pioneer Project and has since engaged in research to provide new user experience through transparent, flexible materials.

Dr. Kyung has proposed a wide range of studies with new concepts, such as a subminiature haptic display for Braille, tactile pens, a touchscreen for tactile feedback, and a transparent, flexible haptic sensor.

He has published over 20 SCI-level research papers in a number of academic journals including the journal published by the IEEE and owns over 30 patents issued in South Korea or overseas.

In 2014, his research paper on a tactile sensor that is as thin and transparent as plastic and works even when bent or placed inside water was published as a cover article in Advanced Materials, one of the most authoritative academic journals.
