UGS(UnderGround Safety) Convergence
The main goal of the UGS (UnderGround Safety) Convergence Research Department is developing an IoT*-based underground monitoring grid system which enables advanced monitoring and prediction on unexpected underground hazards.
For providing successful real-time prediction technology, we first characterize subsurface geological and hydrogeological environments of the target area. Urban railroad tunnel structures, water supply and sewer lines were also investigated for their impacts on the underground safety. The UGS Convergence Research Department, consisting of four Korean government-funded research organizations: Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI), and Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), will concentrate all the possible research capacity to respond public demand on the subsidence events in the cities of South Korea.

UGS Convergence Research Department will develope core technologies until year 2017, and transfer the developed result to participating companies, which will commercialize the technologies. Until year 2020, this developed technologies will be deployed metropolitan cites in Korea, which have urban railroads, and then applied nationwide expansion, and entered overseas market. We hope to contribute to ensure the safety of citizens, and create new related industry.
